On the other hand, there are also the standard games, in which you play on a procedurally generated map against however many opponents you want. On one hand, there are the scenarios, which are games created by the community in which you play on certain maps (Japan, United States, Europe, Earth) with a specific number of opponents. One of the most notable aspects of Freeciv is the large number of customization options available when creating a new game. That said, anyone who has ever played a Civilization game can see that the game is indeed very similar, and the general mechanics are almost identical to any game in Sid Meier's franchise. For this reason, the game not only has a good tutorial, in which you can learn the basics of the game, but it also has a Wiki with several official manuals depending on the rules you're playing with. The learning curve for the vast majority of 4X (the strategy subgenre to which Freeciv belongs) is usually quite high. But how do you win the game? That's easy: you can either annihilate the rest of the civilizations or build a spaceship to reach Alpha Centauri. New games start in 4000 BC by default, with just one settler and one explorer it's up to you to guide your civilization through the years, centuries, and millennia on your quest to become a dominant world power that's capable of winning the game. The gameplay in Freeciv is very similar to that of the aforementioned Civilization 2, although with some additions and tweaks inspired by the third installment, as well. Players can play both offline against the artificial intelligence in games that can last for hours, or online against more than 100 human players from all over the world. Freeciv is a free and open source turn-based strategy game that's openly inspired by the Civilization saga or, more specifically, the second and third installments of the franchise. Let natural sun rays brighten up your living room or enjoy the sound of cicadas on summer nights. In fact, this particular style of door has many different names, which vary depending on where you are.ĭutch doors are extremely practical, whether you want to let air flow through your home while cooking in the kitchen or simply wish to enjoy a pleasant breeze. But this doesn’t mean that everyone calls them this. However, these doors are technically referred to as Dutch doors. What is a Half Door Called? When the top and bottom halves of a door can operate separately, calling it a half door makes sense. Modern Dutch doors have allowed homeowners to play with styles that can be incorporated into any type of space-from an industrial New York City loft to an England-inspired shabby chic home. Now, an interior Dutch door or exterior Dutch door has become compatible with many more styles than the rustic farmhouses they were once popular in. In other parts of the world, they became known as double hung doors, a stable door, a half door, or a split door but the idea for them all came from the Dutch door. Farmhouses used them to keep air flowing throughout the home while preventing farm animals from coming inside and children from getting outside. While the Dutch door got its name because of where it originated, this type of door quickly became a hit in other parts of the world, too-including the Americas. The Dutch door seemed like the perfect solution, with its half-open-half-closed design that gave homeowners and their families the best of both worlds. At this time, Dutch settlers wanted a way to let light and fresh air into the home without leaving their house completely open to the outside world where wildlife and unwanted visitors could get in. What is the History of Dutch Doors? The Dutch door got its start in Holland back in the 17th century colonial era before the screen door was invented. Today, craftsmen offer a wide variety of Dutch doors, including those with solid panels, top and bottom windows, retractable screens, French-paned glass, steel framing, and many more design features and functions. The design made its way to America and became widely popular in the New Jersey and New York area during the Colonial Era. The history of this door goes all the way back to 17th-century Holland, where families wanted to be able to maintain privacy but also be able to open up their homes to fresh air, light, and neighbors. The top door contains a latch that can slide into the receiving end of a latch on the bottom door, allowing a homeowner to easily move between traditional and split door functions when desired. The division creates separately hinged top and bottom doors that can swing open independently of each other. Over the years, this type of door has also been commonly referred to as a stable door, a split door, or a half door. What is a Dutch Door?A Dutch door, essentially, is a door divided in half horizontally. Then come processed culinary ingredients (oils, butter, and sugar), and after that processed foods (tinned vegetables, smoked meats, freshly baked bread, and simple cheeses)-substances to be used carefully as part of a healthy diet. Least worrisome are minimally processed foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and unprocessed meats. Monteiro created a new food classification system-called NOVA-that breaks things down into four categories. “We are proposing a new theory to understand the relationship between diet and health,” Monteiro says. It was the whole system: how the food was processed, how quickly we ate it, and the way it was sold and marketed. It wasn’t just ingredients that made a food unhealthy, Monteiro thought. But Monteiro wanted a new way of categorizing food that emphasized how products were made, not just what was in them. For more than a century, nutrition science has focused on nutrients: Eat less saturated fat, avoid excess sugar, get enough vitamin C, and so on. He thought that something fundamental had shifted in our food system, and scientists needed a new way to talk about it. But the nutritionist wasn’t satisfied with that explanation. If people eat too much unhealthy food, they put on more weight. By the late 2000s, his country was suffering with the exact opposite problem.Īt a glance, Monteiro’s findings seem obvious. When Monteiro first qualified as a doctor in 1972, he’d worried that Brazilians weren’t getting enough to eat. The share of biscuits and soft drinks in Brazilians’ shopping baskets had tripled and quintupled, respectively, since the first household survey in 1974. People were swapping traditional foods-rice, beans, and vegetables-for prepackaged bread, sweets, sausages, and other snacks. Brazilians hadn’t really cut down on fat, salt, and sugar-they were just consuming these nutrients in an entirely new form. If people were buying less fat and sugar, why were they getting bigger? The answer was right there in the data. Between 19 the proportion of Brazilian adults who were overweight or obese more than doubled. Despite this, people were piling on the pounds. In more recent surveys, Monteiro noticed, Brazilians were buying way less oil, sugar, and salt than they had in the past. The nutritionist had been poring over three decades’ worth of data from surveys that asked grocery shoppers to note down every item they bought. This is essential for GTD, and I can't say the same thing about alternative programs. In the late 2000s, Carlos Monteiro noticed something strange about the food that Brazilian people were eating. After a couple of times of using it I was getting things done with the help of the application, and I TRUSTED the application. My choice is Thinking Rock since it allows me to follow the GTD methodology, enables me to print a variety of reports (e.g., by context, by person, by project, etc.), allows me not only to view but also to sort multiple items using different criteria (e.g., action, project, context, etc.), has a very useful pop-up help, works on Windows and Mac (this was particularly important since I had to move back and forth between a PC and my Mac for some projects), has a very detailed Help file, and is very easy to use. Each person has different tastes and preferences. My advice is to download them, use them, and compare them. These 4 programs come to mind since they are recent, but I have used others and always return to Thinking Rock. Again, looks interesting but lacks functionality (e.g, Delegated, Waiting For, viewing multiple projects at once, etc.) It's very rapidly evolving, but at the moment still lacks some GTD features (e.g., Waiting For, Delegated, Reports, etc.)Ĥ. Looks beautiful, but it lacked a lot of functionality for my use.ģ. Perhaps OmniFocus will eventually be a great GTD program, but for now I prefer Thinking Rock.Ģ. For me Thinking Rock has been easier to use on a daily basis. Great and free, but requires OmniOutliner Pro. I would encourage people who find the application useful to donate and show their support.įor comparison, here are some of the applications I have tried:ġ. Right now Thinking Rock is quite impressive for a version 1 software, especially given that it is available for free. The developer is very responsive, bugs have been fixed and requests have been incorporated into the application. Out of all the applications I have tried, Thinking Rock is one of the few that follows David Allen's GTD methodology in detail. Since I'm surprised at the recent reviews I have read for other GTD applications, I thought it would be useful to add a review for Thinking Rock.
